True Peace Corps Stories In Africa

Thinking about the Peace Corps? A volunteer shares her true Peace Corps stories from Africa. The Peace Corps is a life-defining leadership experience you will draw on the rest of your life – so says the introduction on its website – and for every returned volunteer that I’ve met it’s certainly been true.  The main mission has been to promote world peace and friendship, one volunteer at a time. You may be surprised to learn that the age range is 18 and over – and yes, even retired and married couples can find a way to serve. While the image of a Peace Corps worker in most people’s minds is that of a new college graduate who ends up in a grass hut in Africa, there is far more to the Peace Corps experience than that – volunteers work in countries from Asia to Central America and from Europe to Africa, and include mid-career professionals and retirees working in diverse positions with governments, small villages, schools and even entrepreneurs. What’s it like and is it for you?

Kelly, who recently returned from serving in Tanzania, talks about her amazing experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tanzania.
